Document Summary
Why listening matters (according to a recent study) Employees who rated their managers as good listeners said they were happy with their jobs. Managers who were rated as good listeners has received listening training. Highly rated listener groups were women (used more nonverbal cues: nodding your head, responding, (cid:862)uh huh(cid:863) Selecting: hearing is not listening, listening is not easy (noise, thoughts, personal concerns, hearing problems, poor listening habits. Information overload: not all listeners receive the same message. Responding: provide feedback and demonstrate understanding of the message, we validate the message by confirming our sense of worth and value within the conversation. We do pick out or select information that is important to us. In a big crowd of noise, you will hear something that is important to you. In an airport listening to music, we will still hear our flight being announced.
