CMN 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Pope Francis, James Comey, Standpoint Theory
Document Summary
Standpoint theory tells us that we can never escape our place in the economic, social, and political order. Our perceptions depend on who we are, where we are, and how we got to this place. *a(cid:396)ti(cid:272)le i(cid:374) ne(cid:449) yo(cid:396)k ti(cid:373)es a(cid:271)out (cid:862)t(cid:449)o i(cid:396)(cid:373)as,(cid:863) discusses the impact on the poor vs. the rich. Similar to schramm where (cid:862)we can only communicate to people with the same experiences(cid:863) This says that our experiences make us who we are. Perspective taking and empathy are related, but differ in some respects: Perspective taking relates to looking at a picture from potentially many points of view, trying to understand the position of others (more objective, mind-based, strategic, does not imply agreement with position of other person) Empathy ability to feel as the other person feels, experience what they are experiencing (more subjective with deeper sense of connectedness, feelings-based, allied with the idea of emotional intelligence)
