Cmn2181 - cultural patterns and communication: foundations - 27/01/20. Important: cultural differences aren"t always easy to distinguish. The shared interpretations of a culture shapes it"s way of life. Cultural patterns are the expectations that are created by the shared interpretations. They make the interpretation of communication possible as well as forming the base of beliefs, values, norms and social practices. Beliefs: what people think is true or false. These learned interpretations inform us of how the world functions. Values: what is good or bad, right or wrong. Valence is whether a value is considered positive or negative. Values have different levels of importance depending on the culture. Norms: what is appropriate and expected of others. Shared expectations of how to communicate forms the basis of proper interactions. Social practices: the expected behaviors of a culture. Social practices are observable components of beliefs, values and norms. These practices are exhibited in particular settings and have different meanings depending on the occasions.
