Document Summary

Humans express a desire to understand our present communicative circumstances and to predict our future cicumstances. We know much of what we know by agreement rather than by experience. Scientists have certain criteria that need to be met before they accept claims about things that they haven"t experienced before. An assumption must"ve both logical and empirical support. Communication researchers base their knowledge clams on observations rather than their own personal values. Tradition and authority are important sources of understanding. Each of us inherit a culture made up in part of firmly accepted knowledge about the workings of communication. Ie. learning that silence is respectful during funerals. May test some of these on our own, but generally accept these as facts. Despite power of tradition, new knowledge claims about communication appear every day. The acceptance of these new knowledge claims depend on the status of the person that claims to know.
