Document Summary

It always amazes me when people express surprise that there might be a race problem" in canada, or when they attribute the problem" to a minority of prejudiced individuals. Racism is and always has been, one of the bedrocks institutions of canadian society, embedded in the very fabric of our thinking and our personality" (shadd 1989) Racism is generally considered a recent problem linked to the recent arrival of people of racialized minorities a surge of people immigatating from people like asia or africa. However, racism has its origins in the earliest period of canadian history. Colonialism used racism as a political ideology to promote the expansion of its economic power and to justify the exploitation and displacement of indigenous populations. Racism was popular for colonizers not only because it legitimized their exploitation but also because it confirmed their sense of superiority and provided them with a new community to belong to by virtue of their skin colour.
