Offensive to possibly other members of society. Law: may or may not be against the law. Perceptions of deviance or a deviant are not set in stone, they often change. Culture, subculture, group: different norms in different groups. Norms: what is appropriate behaviour, rules that cover appropriate behaviour, rewarded or punished for these actions, embodiment of values (ethical values and ideas, you learn values and norms through socialization. Learned mostly from your family (parents: contribute to social cohesion (respect the norms and beliefs of society) Leads to less con ict in society: normative beliefs. Eg. at a funeral you dress up to show respect. Laws: deviance can be formalized into a law but it doesn"t have to be. Deviance doesn"t mean perversion or depravity: behaviour that violates the social norm but is not necessarily prohibited by law (winterdyk, behaviour that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society (schaefer and haaland)
