Lecture 5 friday, january 29, 2016: cultivating community in contemporary urban. Spaces continuation/ whose community is it anyway? communities as contested. People who look like us have the same values as us. Mobility determines social position have social power. Whose community is it anyway? communities as contested spaces. Space site of power: this behaviour in these spaces is intolerable. Transforming areas of the city to get rid of certain types of people. Govern people by governing the spaces they are going to be in. Can take one of two forms stigmatized others exceptional/absolute others. If left unchecked present a clear threat to society. Exceptional others: corrosive, erode the social and moral fabric, of society but not in it, not operating like the rest of us, doing what they are supposed to be doing. Explain social capital, explain collective efficacy, explain their relation.
