Master status: dominant identity, overrides other statuses in all context. Prime minister overrides the fact that he"s also a husband / father / son / etc. Spoiled identity will make impression management hard: will likely become their master status. These will be primarily judged by a stigmatized attribute or quality. Negotiating stigma: might only attempt to associate with people who are similarly stigmatized. Master status also becomes how you see yourself: in the process of attempting to figure out who we are will use others as a mirror cooley: Social process differs depending on the context and who you"re relating to. Because institutions stigmatize individuals, institutions themselves prevent the very things they claim they"re doing re-socializing individuals and then helping them reintegrate back into society. 60s-70s: firm disability rights movement starting: instituted in law, disability rights act. People arguing for people who are differently abled: us: emerged when veterans were coming back from vietnam.
