John farley (2000) defines an ethnic group as a group of people who are generally recognized by themselves and/or by others as a distinct group, with such recognition based on social or cultural characteristics . The perception of a shared history of some sort. Shared symbols of peoplehood (kinship patterns, geographical concentration, religious affiliation, language) Originally thought as a genetically distinct subpopulation of a species: only 4 distinct races: white, black, chinese, and indian (first nations) Categorizing individuals based on phetnotypical differences (differences of facial charavteristics, skin colour, hair texture, etc) Differences do not correlate to geneotypical differences (differences in genetic makeup) Idea of race is due more to pop culture, than actual science. Science is unable to link any physical differences in the ability of intelligence. Scientific research has shown genetic differences among human groups that we view as race are inconsistent and insignificant.
