During this time the internet was like the wild west. Number of pages rose quickly, which made it hard to find things quickly. Early 90s opened searched engines that would read content on the web and not just work on human curated lists. Started as searching for a word and all pages with that word would come up. There also wasn"t a ranking list for importance, and pages with the word typed more would appear higher. This ended in web designers making invisible words to help make their results show up higher in searches. Had ranking algorithms based on links moving the result higher (other pages linking to that page made it more popular) How things are ranked - look at google"s economic.
