Social liberty assists with you with personal enjoyment of freedom. Liberty is a new conception, it is modern. In pre-modern era, people were free but their own nature, but could not enjoy it because of the absence of liberalism/democracy. Important to distinguish the pre-modern from modern time. Modern: people are seen as rational, free beings and therefore able to experience liberty. Pre-modern era there were some types of liberty, but not entirely. Modern era people were able to establish themselves as citizens. * look at slide show of freedom vs liberty chart. Voting in ancient time didn"t mean liberty since personality was lost in the crowd. > intellectual development of mankind, consciousness of being free. > social confirmation of the modern human beings. > moving away from potentiality to actuality of freedom.
