Why do these things matters so much? because they give us rights over our own lives. Rights provide us with a framework with what we can, cannot, should, and should not do. Democracy is an expression over those rights, it is our collective destiny, individually and collectively. On the other hand, anyone that thinks that democracy means we actually rule is an idiot. The people in any direct sense do not rule in a democracy. If sovereignty applies to a social contract, it applies to those that are in it. Democracy is tied to a territory (state), which gives us control over our collective lives. Problem: we live in a world where territorial control is harder to determine, territorial dynamics are national, international, and transnational.
