Document Summary

Lecture 1 war as a product of human nature. Violence in primitive societies: napoleon chagnon and the yanomamo. Thesis is contested: some hunter-gatherers don"t wage war. Archaeological evidence on early war: earliest evidence sudan, c 12-10000 bc. Little evidence before 10000 bc: walls of jericho 8000bc, firm evidence by 7,000bc. Characteristics of primitive war: battles rare and rarely fatal ritualistic, raids and ambushes more common and more dangerous. Supposed failings of primitive war: voluntary and so only a small part of available resources mobilized. Inability to conduct protracted campaigns: no organized training, poor command and control, undisciplined units and flighty morale, few weapons designed specifically for war, no professional warriors or specializations. Later developments: fortifications, creation of warrior class, specialization, technologies specific for war, more face to face battle. Possible motive for war: rational vs. irrational motives, fear/honour/profit, security/honour/self-interest, strength/wealth/prestige.
