Document Summary

Chapter # 10: unemployment and the demand for labour. The labour force refers to the people who are in the working age population and are either employed or unemployed: the working-age population is the civilian, noninstitutional population over 16 years old. The unemployment rate is the number of employed people divided by the number of people in the labour force: Unemployment rate: number of unemployed / labour force x 100. Where labour force= number of employed and unemployed. Given the categories of employment, employment statistics can be calculated. Unemployment rate june 2008: (1,079,100/ 18,079,800) x 100 = 6. 0% Unemployment rate june 2009: (1,585,700/ 18,259,800) x 100 = 8. 7% The state of the economy is also understood by looking at the labour force participation rate (lfpr): Lfpr= (labour force/ working age population ) x 100. The lfpr indicates what fraction of the population wants to be working, regardless of whether or not they actually have a job.
