They should do not more than just begin a paper, to hook the interest and imagination of the reader. Tell them a little bit more about the topic or subject of your paper. You want to establish a rapport with your reader in this initial stage of paper. Increased understanding of your position and of confirmation of your assertion. Topic sentences are statements of central ideas that you develop within the paragraph that follows.
