We only really know maria"s point of view. For the most part we say things from maria"s point of view. The way the sentences are stringed togetherand this and this and this she has a pretty limited point of view. Limited narrator and uses pretty much the same language. She is going to masshence we know she is catholic. She worked at a laundry now - low class. She counts her pennieslooses her cake and almost cries. She met someone she considers a gentleman on the tram. She doesn"t have a very good social scale. The idea of maria as a social outcast. The source of dispute/problem between her and stelerando. Kind of family: her sister, mother, grandfather, brother no clue of father. Central theme of the story: family dynamics, sibling rival, lack of communication, lying as a form of power. Lie in the form of powerone sister taking power over the other.
