Document Summary

Setting refers to the place and time in which the story is set. Look for clues about where and when the story is set. Note that it can be helpful to use the year of publication to get a handle on the time period, but it is by no means definitive. Writers can write stories set much earlier than the period in which they live. Occasionally, they can write about a projected future. Sometimes setting is very important; sometimes it is only incidental. Sometimes setting is specific and densely rendered; sometimes it is generic. The macro setting is the general time and location of the story (e. g. , Russia in the late 18th century; dublin in the early 20th ceuntry. The micro setting is the more specific locale (e. g. a crumbling old mansion, a contemporary living room, a train station) The micro setting is often very important to the story.
