A man on sea voyage writing to his sister. His goal is trying to reach the north pole. Northwest passage was very valuableit would save a lot of time. This sets us up for the rest of the story. He"s on some kind of special quest or mission. It was long time before they could hand out the letters. These letters are a convenient device for the writer. The first part of the novel uses the epistolary device. Mary shelly was 18 when she wrote the book. Mary shelley (nee godwin) was born in 1797. Her parents were mary wollstonecraft and willian godwin. Her mother died 11 days after her birth. Mary wollstonecraft (mother) writer, philosopher, and advocate of women"s rights. She wrote a vindication of the rights of women. She wanted equaity for all those deprived of the right to vote (including women)
