The student hairdresser, however, is not up to the task and gives jing-mei an uneven mass of crinkly black fuzz (291): the episode at the hair salon illuminates several things. First, it is the mother, not jing-mei herself, who initiates this attempted transformation. The incident, then, is not an example of jing-mei trying to become.
