Document Summary

[1] what do the first three paragraphs tell us about the setting of the story: in the first three paragraphs the physical setting of the story is established as well as the mood. The residents of north richmond street are catholic and working class. [2] how is mangan"s sister described in the story: when the protagonist encounters mangan"s sister, his sense of infatuation is so powerful that he is overwhelmed and can barely speak to her. The story links the boy"s fantasy with a broader social fantasy about the orient. The realization, at the end of the story, that this realm of fantastic wonders is merely a mundane place part of everyday. Dublin painfully destroys the boy"s illusion: in this way the story suggests that the experience of disillusionment for the boy, and perhaps even the western world can be simultaneously illuminating and traumatic.
