Eng 1120 q literature and composition i: introduction to prose fiction. Tone and atmosphere set up in first 2 paragraphs of araby. Childhood: vivid vital, alive w/ senses senses are not just imaginary but physical. He sees it as being an adult trying to be a man. Can see this affect kid in his adulthood/understanding of changes once he is an adult. Broken windows lets rain come through. No money to occupy 2nd part of house, have to rent. Poor living conditions: complicated time for him puberty, drunk uncle. Uncle goes to pub more often than come home. Absent parents: adult models, girl across street (never get name or complete description) Taken too far, rationalism may not address reality properly. In this story we see someone criticized. Evidence in story that romanticism that joyce has in his sights just as much as religion: british rule.
