Two kinds the ways ppl can contruct a sense of self. Daughter still depends on mother (the solid wall of opposition that she"s pushing against) Mother came from a high standing, but she lost everything. so shes using material things give you security. she wants her daughter to get these things. this is why she has a grip on the american dream. 292 the daughter imagines herself as all these fairytale (cinderella, christ child, ballerina girl) things. shes engaging in a childish way. Mother gets her tests (that she asks her daughter every night after dinner) from ripley"s believe it or not, and readers digest. (her source is not right) 293 is when the girl starts changing. making powerful/angry -> negative emotion. and then she associates the term that her mom wants her to be.
