Maybe at the end he isn"t really free. The memory of this past still lives with him. 10 years later, is it still preoccupied with the schedule of his previous life. He is probably feeling guilty for his father"s suicide. The cigarettes represent the link to his father. The cigarettes leave inerasable scars on the table his father scars on his own life. Process of moving from childhood to adulthood. Usually involves making a decision, choice or sacrifice. Problems arise when options appear changes in the way of life.
