Gothic: when we looked at poe, i talked about the gothic, the full gothic style, however, originally involved the following: A setting incorporating large and/or ancient buildings (often decayed and/or isolated) and/or disturbing (bleak, desolate, empty) natural landscapes. Sense of terror felt by characters (and readers?) Supernatural, seemingly supernatural or apparently inexplicable or weird events. Deviance from social norms: abusing of power, violation of trust and responsibility, corruption and abusing of relationships. Vulnerable people (usually young women) as victims or people at risk. 1: as we read the yellow wallpaper we can see that a number of those elements. Making sense: as readers, we have to make sense of the story and look for patterns and meaning, in so doing, we are like gilman"s narrator/protagonist as she tries to make sense of the wallpaper. Time frame: about 3 months (rented house for about 3 months)
