The house was divided in an unexpected way (152) The phrase house divided often means a metaphor for a feuding or divided family, but here it is an unexpected way . We might want to think about that. One is her idea of what her mother might do with flora"s story, with flora as noble, rising above the treachery and humiliation with grace and humility. The other is what she (the narrator) does with it, with flora as much less sympathetic, a preshyterian witch finally undermined by her health (163-4)
