But james did more than supervise the internationalization of american letters. He expanded the range of formal and thematic possibility for both his contemporaries and his successors. Viewed as an american writer because he was born and raised in america, but he lived most of his life and published most of his work as an american patriot in england. Reflects the transformation of american literature from a much more clustered and parochial, insulated and isolated tradition founded by an antagonistic attitude towards. He is a writer who identified himself as being cosmopolitan and identifies more with. James is probably the most important writer during this period of transition. He was a relentless experimentalist and played formally with fictional discourse. Reshaped the notion/conception of prose fiction and particularly the novel.
