Grew up in a religious home - his parents were lax, but his nurse was very strict presbyterian (calvinist) Rejected his religious upbringing and lived a bohemian lifestyle. Travelled frequently, including north america and the pacific. Treasure island began as a drawing of a map he made for his stepson lloyd. Stevenson was hugely popular and well respected during his lifetime and was a key figure in theorizing the role of the author during the 1880"s and 90"s, when the course of publishing was changing dramatically. His reputation declined after his death, largely due to further changes in literary culture that preluded the victorian social novel over minor genres which stevenson worked in. Most important works are in various genres: children"s writing, adventure, travel narratives, urban gothic, and essays on the art of writing fiction.
