Stevenson was hugely popular and well respected during his lifetime and was a key figure in theorizing the role of the author during the 1880"s and 90"s, when the course of publishing was changing dramatically. His reputation declined after his death, largely due to further changes in literary culture that preluded the victorian social novel over minor genres which stevenson worked in. Most important works are in various genres: children"s writing, adventure, travel narratives, urban gothic, and essays on the art of writing fiction.
