Fairy tales arrive out of folk tales; people told them by the fireside, etc. ; word version around longer than written versions; Fairy tales = sexual morality; vs. folk tales = adventure stories. Oldest of fairy tale authors = perrault. First one to write down the fairy tales and disseminate them; took stories going around and repurposed them for stories for children. ** had to rewrite the stories to make them suitable for children; No one else tried to go into the forest: grimm: fuzzier on the details, more on the facts; more focus on the prince goal: more to preserve the story itself. Other people have died trying to find the princess. More realistic; cook/boy draw attention to common people; people who"s story this tale is supposed to preserve. Archetypes; general figures that are applicable to many stories: fairy tales = foundation for other children"s writing, archetypal characters simple characters and easy to play with.
