Lecture 8 (cid:498)star wars for perverts(cid:499) (cid:523)saga pt. (cid:883)(cid:524) An old norse word meaning (cid:494)spoken narrative(cid:495), applied to narrative compositions produced in iceland and norway in the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, but typically set much earlier. There are three main types of saga: family sagas, dealing with the first settlers of iceland and their descendants; kings" sagas, historical works about the kings of norway; and legendary or heroic sagas, fantastic adventure stories about legendary heroes. An ongoing and epic tale of ondoing, but it is also focused on the family and those who they come in contact with. Also comes in contact with the element of a retrospective throwback story (hazel is telling the story from the future: meant to reflect oral storytelling. The family sagas and the kings" sagas share an elegant, laconic style, notable for its air of detached objectivity.
