Lancelot had become the lover of guinevere before chretien represented him this way. This development of lancelot"s character accord so well with the sense of the poem. Lancelot came into existence as an answer to an already answered love story of tristan and isolt. He was in love with the wife of his king. In dealing with lancelot, two problems confront us initially the opening and the closing of the poem. He is giving his careful attention to it. The matter and the meaning are imposed on him. Leaves with kay- strange reversal because she"s the queen. Chretien may"ve been at a loss to find an appropriate ending of the story. Series of adventures in which lancelot has to prove himself. The chose knight in c"s world is chosen not because some force will clear his path of all obstacles, but because he possesses qualities to overcome obstacles that no other knight could.
