When does the modern period start: it is a natural tendency to think of the modern period chronologically, however, we must think of modernism as a cultural context as opposed to a speci c date. In other words, do not look at modernism in terms of chronological recentness: modernity and modernism are not synonymous, erga pound = make it new - the goal of the modern writer was succinctly captured in this phrase. > slogan that characterizes the kind of innovation that modern writers, poets and novelists were trying to initiate involving, from one point of view, a departure from the past and cultural/ literary traditions. > this term was coined by gerard manely hopkins. What makes a writer modern: a modern writer is someone who has the whole of western literature in his bones. This is a very paradoxical literary strategy because the new always has to depend on the old.
