FEM 2110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Diana E. H. Russell, Mi5, Victim Blaming
Document Summary
Since the 1970s we"ve been pushing back against sexual violence. Started with diana russell, she did research in the us which changed the way we looked at violence against women. Before then, we would call people, ask if they"ve been victims of crimes, if they said yes we would ask more questions. From the surveys, we learned that rape almost never happened. Even though we knew there was domestic violence in households, we didn"t really think it was a big issue. In the early 1970s diana starts to realize theres problems with this, almost everyone she knows has been a victim of violence of some sort. Some have even been the victims of incest. She argued that by rst asking to speak to the head of the household, it is usually a man. If you ask the victims if they"ve been a victim, most of the time they won"t say yes.
