Document Summary

Very vague definition: localized in a basin, distinct from lagoons and ponds, sediment sinks, contrast with rivers and streams (which flow) [although most lakes are flowing] Lakes die when their basin fills with sediment. Natural lakes tend to be (generally) round with the deepest section near the middle, while man-made lakes are more irregular with the deepest point near the dam. A body of water where light penetrates all the way to the bottom. Water is shallow enough for rooted water plants to grow throughout, and lack wave action on the shoreline due to riparian vegetation. Some classify ponds purely by size (less than 8 hectares = pond) Swamp: woody vegetation is present & living. Marsh: dominated by grassy vegetation, though some woody may be present. Fens: can be alkaline or acidic and fed by surface or ground water; both based on the influence of the substrate. The vegetation is variable and a function of the water chemistry.
