Tributaries: the little streamlets that flow into larger streams. Stream order: the number of tributaries draining a watershed into its outlets. Watershed or drainage basin: is the area of land that is drained by rivers and its tributaries. Floodplains: are the flat areas nearest to a river"s course, which are periodically flooded. Flowing water is only one part of riparian and riverine systems. Riparian: forests are riverside and extremely productive. Floodplains are arable and fertile due to regular deposits of sediment. Erosion, transport, and deposits of sediment by the water are vitally important processes. Diversions: the rerouting of river water from its natural river channel or drainage basin by means of build structures. Wetlands are systems that combine elements of freshwater and dry land. Wetlands form where this is a surplus of water.
