Document Summary
Seven influences on climate (why does climate vary spatially?: latitude (affects insolation)-this affects insolation. Insolation is another word for radiation from the sun: altitude (environmental lapse rate averages 6. 5 c/1000 m)-as you go up the temperature drops by 6. 5/100m. this is an average value for the whole globe. An exception for valleys cold air pools at bottom: distribution of land and sea (continental vs. maritime climates)-water influences climate on land. City in the middle of the continent vs a city on the edge of a continent: nature of ocean currents-cold and warm ocean currents affect the temperature on land, distribution of mountain barriers-create and impact the climate. The air is forced to rise as it reaches a mountain barrier and causes rain fall on the western side (vancouver gets a lot of rain): pattern of prevailing winds-mountain barriers interact with the winds. The winds are also from the west and south west.
