Document Summary

When initially developed stated that it is normal for ppl to disengage from aspects of life. Some of the critics said that this theory did not take into consideration individual variability, and poor fit for the evidence at that time. After this more research came out that highlighted the strength of older ppl and their contributions they were making. Late 1900s we looked more at positive aspects of aging. Overlapping themes: successful aging, productive aging, and civic engagement. Successful aging: highlight what ppl are doing to postpone aging like social engagement and preventative health care. Productive aging: activities that ppl engage in that allow them to socially and economic contribution to their communities (example with kids: go to school) People who engage in activities report greater life satisfaction and older adults seek. Ppl advocating for older ppl say they have the right and obligation to remain active continuity as they adapt to changes in later life.
