HSS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Blood Pressure, Exercise Physiology, Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
Chapter 4: engaging in physical activity for health, fitness and performance - exam prep. Physical activity: all the body movements produced by skeletal muscles resulting in energy expenditure (health canada, 2004). 15% of canadian adults meet physical activity recommendations. 7% of children and adolescents are sufficiently active. Males are generally more active than females. Benefits of physical activity include reduced chances of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, depression, osteoporosis and premature death. Exercise: planned, structured, and repetitive body movements done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness, such as cardiovascular endurance, or flexibility (health canada, 2004). Physical fitness: a set of attributes that are either health or performance related. To me physically fit you need to do more than make healthier life choices. Particular exercises need to be performed over an extended length of time, at a specific intensity intervals, and repeated throughout the week.
