HSS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Bactericide, Diphtheria, White Blood Cell
Document Summary
Micro = small, bio = life, logy = study of. Immunology: study of our protecion from foreign macromolecules or invading organisms and our responses to them. Bacteria: no separate nucleus, unicellular: rigid cell wall, geneic material in circular chromosome, no nucleus, both dna and rna, binary ission, mycoplasmas are similar to bacteria but don"t have rigid wall, more delicate. Gi tract: colon has anaerobes and coliforms. What they do: protecion from bad bacteria, metabolism, immune simulaion. Infecions with bacteria happen when a single species becomes predominant at a site where there is usually lots of species, or when a single organism invades a body site that is normally sterile. Mechanical barriers: skin is the main one, saliva, mucous, tears, hairs etc. Other helpers include: anibodies: may funcion as opsonin or may kill organisms directly, complement: complex system of plasma proteins that work together to resist bacterial infecion.
