Functions create an impression, identify and express emotions, define relationships, establish power and influence, interpret verbal messages, deceiving others and detecting deception detecting lies (not being yourself) Repeat reinforces the verbal message i. e grab shoulder while saying you hurt your shoulder. Complement congruency; nonverbal cue goes with what"s being said i. e happy with a smile. Contradict opposite of what is said i. e happy but slouchy and no smile. Accent emphasizing the emotional aspect of the message i. e talking softer when sad. Regulate social expectations i. e who talks first.
