Document Summary

Com + health- ch 6 textbook notes. Message components other than words that generate meaning. 60-70% of meaning we generate is from non-verbal communication. Includes: body language, facial expressions, touch, context, etc. When aware of your own non-verbal expressions and can understand others, you are more likely to be successful. Create an impression: when you walk into a room, people notice your clothing, body language, posture; in a courtroom people already make a judgment on you before you even testify (start talking) Define relationships: the nonverbal acts that we express in a group or with others can show how much they mean to us or what position you have within a group. Establish power and influence: those who are more powerful speak much more confidently, take up more space and command attention from others. Interpret verbal messages: provides us with a metamessage (message within a message). How someone acts when they speak can influence how you you interpret their message.
