Meiosis - 4 daughter cells that have half the dna compliment. The dna replication machinery is also used for dna repair. The two strands of the double helix are held together by hydrogen bonds. Gradual separation of the stands of the double helix > zipper. Synthesis of two daughter strands complementary to the two parental templates. Each daughter duplex contains one strand from the parent structure. Now we know this template to be true. Two original strands would remain together after serving as templates. Parental strand broken into fragments, new strands synthesized in short segments, Both daughter duplexes > old fragments and new fragments. Referred to as the most beautiful experiment ever done in biology. Evidence for semi-conservative replication where two parent strands serve as the template for the synthesis of new strands. Bacterial cells were grown for several generations on a medium containing heavy isotope of nitrogen (n15).
