HSS 2305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Ritonavir, Non-Competitive Inhibition, Tipranavir
Document Summary
Hiv when it infects a white blood cell: : unlike other enzyme inhibitors (as ritonavir) it does not resemble the peptide substrate of the enzyme nor does it compete with the substrate. Not so long ago, it was hardly believed that human health would non-longer be threatened by serious bacterial infections. This state of affairs has changed dramatically in the past several decades, as pathogenetic bacteria have (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e i(cid:374)(cid:272)reasi(cid:374)gly resista(cid:374)t to these (cid:858)(cid:449)o(cid:374)der drugs(cid:859), leadi(cid:374)g to the death of (cid:373)a(cid:374)y people (cid:449)ho would once have been treated successfully. For example: tuberculosis: mycobacterium tuberculosis had disappeared from developed countries but has remerged as xdr: extremely drug resistant and is virtually untreatable, staphylococcus infection: staphylococcus aureus, has developed vancomycin-resistant strains. This bacterium is a common inhabitant of the skin and nasal cavity, but can cause life- threatening infections in hospitalized patients who have open wounds or tube invasions.
