Document Summary
Weight management: overweight, obesity, and underweight: overweight and obesity. It is now estimated that 60% of canadian adults are overweight (bmi > 25) or obese (bmi > 30), with childhood obesity also on the rise. This cost to the health-care system is in the billions of dollars annually: fat cell development. When there is an energy imbalance (energy in > energy out), this excess energy is stored in fat cells of adipose tissue. Body fat is re ected in the number and size of fat cells, where in growing years fat cells grow more rapidly with obese individuals having more fat cells. Over- extension of fat cells leads to metabolic disturbances, such as insulin resistance and in ammation, which contributed to the development of diabetes and cvd in obese individuals. When energy out > energy in fat cell size decreases, however there is no change in number of fat cells: preview of lipid metabolism.
