Gets at many of the questions like i don"t know what the proper language is or how to approach someone with a disability. Reading academic journals helps you keep up with what"s going on. Despite being tricky, you have to find a way to approach this topic. Authors point out that disability is a form of diversity. Person first language is person with a disability. Idea of cultural competence (important) person who happens to be blind . Identity first more political and comes out of disability studies and it seeks to reclaim labels and be empowered. Identity first allows persons to claim disability and own it as a source of pride. Both are compatible with who international classification of functioning model. Best way to resolve this dilemma is asking people how they wish to be referred to!
