Mulilingualism/bilingualism use of 2 or more languages by an individual or speech community. In canada, more than 200 languages have been reported as one"s home language. 17. 5% of canada"s populaion (5. 8 million people) reported speaking 2 languages at home. Funcional compartmentalizaion idea that not all languages have equal status. Hard to deine due to idea of linguisic proiciency. (and how it is measured) Baeten"s beardsmore observed that bilingualism as a term is open-ended & means diferent things to diferent people. Wallace lambert coined the term balanced bilingual (individuals who are equally competent in both languages this idea has laws though) Defecive bilinguals idea of bilinguals who don"t have perfect mastery of either language. Semilingualism theory that refers to condiion where bilingual children are reported to know neither of their 2+ languages well enough to be able to engage in advanced cogniive processes enabling them to beneit from mainstream educaion. Curse of babel: biblical story idea of a distrust of mulilingualism.
