Gender norms are what is socially acceptable for each gender. When these norms are broken society reacts negatively. Gender norms: socialization into gender norms begins in utero and in injancy. Continues into early childhood and during primary school with hobbies and activities. It continues into secondary school with hobbies and activities. It also continues into post-secondary school with career choices (military, construction for men, nurse, teacher for women) A framework of ideas that suggests identities are not stable or deterministic, particularly in regard to an individual"s gender and/or sexuality. Origins: women"s studies, feminist theory, gay and lesbian studies, postmodernism. Structure and linkages: order of appearances of relationships: individuals are socially conditioned to fit into one of the heteronormative binaries of gender. Assumptions: gender is a discursive construct, not an essential biological part of being human, gender cannot be disconnected from the other categories of social status and identity.
