Carotid arteries: ausculate for bruits ( put bell over carotid artery at angle of the jaw, midclavicular level at the base of the neck have patient take a breath and exhale holding briefly (sound like a swooshing) Bruit is indicitve of blood flow, can indicate stenosis or blockage of an artery if you were a bruit do not palpte the artery (this would add more pressure: palpate pulse. Gentle to avoid vagal stimulation (cid:523)we don"t want to slow the heart rate(cid:524) findings should be equal bilaterally. Should be moderate intensity if you feel a vibration called a thrill ausculatate. If you cannot find it note the external jugular vein. Reliable indicator of central venous pressure of the heart: estimate jugular veous pressure (cid:523)we don"t need to know how to do it(cid:524, palpate for hepatojugular reflux. An abnormal fining with heart failure is the vein will remain elevated for as long as the pressure occurs.
