PAP 3310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Semi-Structured Interview, Frank Luntz, Mass Media
Document Summary
The terms ethnography" and participant observation" are essentially synonymous, although ethnography is the more inclusive term: inductive, qualitative research method. The researcher is immersed in a particular social setting for a long period of time, sometimes even years. Behavior is observed in an unstructured way, and often in-depth, unstructured discussions and interviews are held with the people studied. Example in public administration: first used to study other countries, based in the study of anthropology. Would be able to make political assumptions regarding cultures and societies. Overt": the people being studied know they are being observed by a researcher. Covert": the people being studied do not know they are being observed by a researcher. Open" or public settings: e. g. refugee camps, downtown sidewalks, etc: in an open setting may be difficult to make observations and talk to people. Closed": i. e. private or restricted settings: meetings of political movement and organizations, etc.
