Document Summary

Chapter 3- evaluating arguments the purpose of analyzing arguments (presenting arguments in standard form. Deductive arguments (deduction or syllogism) in deductive arguments, the premises are meant to guarantee the conclusion (100%) it is an argument intended to provide logically conclusive support for its conclusion. When we evaluate deductive arguments we characterize them as either valid or invalid if a = b, b = c, therefore a = c ex: if whales are mammals, they have lungs. Non-deductive arguments (induction) an argument intended to provide probable (but not conclusive) support for its conclusion (probable or likely) in non-deductive arguments, the premises are meant to confer some high degree of probability on the conclusion (99% or less) When we evaluate non-deductive arguments we describe them as either successful or unsuccessful ex: jenna was stoned, stabbed, shot, and scalped. *must be able to state valid or invalid if deductive. Truth: truth or falsity only applies to single statements or claims (premises and conclusions)
