42 views2 pages

Document Summary

The world, self and god are now meaningless because of kierkegaard, marx and. He was in the resistance against the nazis. Existentialism for sartre: essence (the soul) and existence (expression of the essence). It takes for granted and proposes that existence is what determines essence; in other words, it is how i am and what i do and how i exist, that determines what i am (not the other way around). Ex: i commit brave and just actions, and therefore i am brace and just. If you are looking for the essence of virtue, act virtuous and you will find it. If there is no essence, then we have nothingness, which is a feature of existence. Humans can live in a way that creates meaning by creating it on a background of nothingness other things of the world can"t, they"re always something, and therefore not free. A human does not exist like a chair does.
